How Often Should You Replace Your Shower Filter Cartridge?
A shower filter is not a lifetime device — the cartridge inside does the work, and it has a capacity. Once its media is saturated, water flows through without being treated, and you're back to square one without noticing.
The short answer
Every 6 months for a typical household. Every 3–4 months if your water is very hard, you have a big family, or you shower long and hot (heat releases more chlorine).
Four signs your cartridge is done
- Your symptoms come back. The tight skin and dry hair the filter fixed start creeping back in.
- The chlorine smell returns. If you can smell pool in your bathroom again, the media is saturated.
- Water pressure drops noticeably. A cartridge full of trapped sediment restricts flow.
- It's simply been six months. Even with soft water, media capacity is finite.
Replacing it takes seconds
Unscrew the housing, swap the old cartridge for a genuine refill, screw it back. No tape or tools needed for the cartridge itself.
A tip that saves money
Refills cost less per unit in multipacks, and kits bundle them with the filters — compare on the Bundle & Save page. Set a phone reminder for 6 months from today; your skin will tell you anyway, but the reminder is cheaper.
